[00:00:00] Wendi: Hello, and welcome to episode 225. Today, we are talking about learning and development and how this is going to impact your career after the military. But first, I want to invite you to come join me over on LinkedIn on Thursday, July 18th at 12 PM, Eastern Standard Time to learn the 10 common career mistakes.

[00:00:22] Wendi: I want to continue to empower you during your military transition, so you have to come learn and be aware of what not to do when you’re transitioning and also what to look for. So, with that, I want to emphasize and encourage you to focus on learning and development. Now, I want you to start today and encourage you to start today because it’s really going to set you apart.

[00:00:50] Wendi: When you are looking for career opportunities, when you transition, when you are defining your career goals after the military, this is going to help you. I [00:01:00] want you to forget about the excuses. I know you may be a wife, a mom, you have a lot of things going on, you’re in a leadership position, but you want to begin to make time.

[00:01:12] Wendi: For your learning and development, spending 30 minutes a week, depending on how far out you are with your transition, how much time you have left, you want to invest this time to focus on your learning and development. You can do that while you’re in the military. You can do that through military schools.

[00:01:30] Wendi: You can do that by identifying what skills are going to translate outside of the military and also by beginning to look at roles or what learning programs are out there that are going to prepare you for that role. So if you weren’t in my previous LinkedIn live on identifying your career role, I invite you to go check that out.

[00:01:53] Wendi: It’s in the show notes so that you can get a start on what to look for. in your career after the military. [00:02:00] And with that, you’re going to see that there are certain things that they prefer when it comes to that specific role. So if it’s a PMP, project management opportunity, if it’s a PHR in human resources, your human resource certification, if it’s cybersecurity, what certifications do you need?

[00:02:19] Wendi: And you want to identify that so that you can start. To implement it in your weekly routine. Where do you get that certification? You do your research now. I encourage you to set time to focus on those things. It could be a simple workshop. It could be you joining me on July 18th and learning what to avoid.

[00:02:41] Wendi: These are the things that I’m talking about when it comes to you learning. Also, setting up a LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn is a powerful platform for you to begin to network, but in order for you to do that, you want to create a profile. You want to go over there and start connecting with people that you already know.

[00:02:58] Wendi: And come connect with [00:03:00] me like, Hey, Wendy, I just heard your podcast or Hey, when you’re just connecting, want to learn more about how you got to this position, whomever you feel more comfortable reaching out to, Hey, Sam, I saw that you are the VP of operations. Can you tell me more I’m getting out in five years?

[00:03:17] Wendi: How can you you know, what tips can you give me to help me with my transition that I can start doing now? Certification. Any skills, any schools that you want to attend now, equal opportunity, master resilience training. These are great military training schools that you could do now so that you can go into the HR field, the operations field, the anything to do with organizational development.

[00:03:42] Wendi: This will help you in change management, leadership roles. Are you going to the next leadership, senior leadership development course? What can you do now in the military that is going to set you up for success? In the civilian sector, you identifying and translating your skills now is going to help you.[00:04:00]

[00:04:00] Wendi: That’s a part of you learning and developing your skills. What is it that you have learned now that you can now translate in the civilian sector? Oh, master resiliency training is definitely going to help me with change management or organizational development or in the HR field in general or any leadership and management.

[00:04:19] Wendi: opportunity. So I want you to start identifying that. I want you to look at your skills. How can you translate them? I want you to also consider, you know, how can you begin to look at these things on a platform like LinkedIn, connecting on LinkedIn? How can you learn more about the platform? How can you learn more about the programs that they offer you?

[00:04:37] Wendi: The programs that are out there for veterans, LinkedIn is where you can find them. There are so many programs that are going to help you with your certifications, pursuing your education. The schools are on there. There are schools with recruiters to help you learn more about their programs, the programs that focus on veterans.

[00:04:56] Wendi: And also, if you are looking for certifications [00:05:00] and maybe you don’t want to pay out of pocket, there are schools that going to help you with getting a PMP, with getting a certification in HR, a certification in cybersecurity. They offer certifications and it’s Syracuse University. So go out there, begin to set time for yourself and your future career. Now you want to start learning and developing today. Your brain’s gonna be like, I have so many responsibilities. I have so many things to do. It’s okay. It’s normal, but I want you to find time. Set at least 30 minutes a week to do your research to keep learning about programs. Keep learning about what opportunities are out there. What certifications do you need?

[00:05:38] Wendi: What is it that is going to help you in the future? What are you doing now that is going to help you in the future? All right. I hope this is helpful. Let me know. Come over on LinkedIn, connect with me, follow me. I would like to know. What certifications you’re looking for, what you’re pursuing, and if there’s any way that I can help you that I can connect you to other people.

[00:05:57] Wendi: All right, I look forward to seeing you on July 18th [00:06:00] at 12 p. m. Eastern Standard Time over on LinkedIn. Have a beautiful rest of your week. Bye.
